Live cargo: when bees travel across Europe in a refrigerated truck
Some cargo hums. Not a machine, not a unit, but thousands of live insects in carefully stacked boxes on the loading area of a refrigerated truck. Bee colonies, bumblebees and beneficial organisms are on their way to fields and greenhouses, where they do a job that no machine can replace: pollination.
Around 85 percent of the agricultural yields in German crop and fruit growing depend on pollination by insects. Alongside cattle and pigs, honey bees are among the three most important farm animals in the country. Bumblebees complement them, because they also fly out at temperatures from two degrees Celsius and work even in rain, fog and low light. For many crops, from tomatoes to blueberries, they are even more efficient pollinators.
Getting these insects to where they are needed at all is a logistical task that leaves hardly any room for error.
The time window is tight. Very tight.
Bees and bumblebees are needed in the field at a specific time, not by chance, but exactly when flowering begins. Two days too late can mean that pollination does not take place and the entire harvest yield suffers. The consignor must have the colonies ready for dispatch at exactly the right moment, the recipient must be prepared, and nothing must go wrong en route.
For deliveries to third countries, customs clearance is added. A consignment of live insects cannot wait for days in a warehouse for release. In such cases the entire transport, from collection at the breeder to handover in the recipient's field, must not take longer than three days. This requires a double driver crew so that the vehicle can drive through without longer stops, as well as customs clearance prepared in advance so that no delays arise at the border.
Temperature decides the life and death of the cargo.
Bee colonies regulate their hive temperature themselves and keep it at around 35 °C. During transport, when the colonies are enclosed and cannot move freely, the temperature inside the boxes rises quickly. Without active cooling this can end fatally within a few hours. Bumblebees are already under stress from 28 °C and shift their entire activity to cooling the hive. From 32 °C irreversible damage threatens.
For this type of transport, a refrigerated truck is not an option but a prerequisite. The cooling temperature must be constantly monitored and adapted to the needs of the respective insect species. Too cold is just as problematic as too warm, because in frost many beneficial species die within a very short time. Temperature control during the entire journey is documented by thermograph, and any deviation must be corrected immediately.
The vehicle has to be able to breathe.
Unlike most refrigerated transports, live insects need air circulation. A hermetically sealed refrigerated trailer that works perfectly for food can become a trap for bee colonies if the ventilation is not right. The vehicles must be set up so that cooled air flows evenly around the hives, with no dead spots where heat builds up.
Cargo securing is also subject to different rules than a pallet of industrial goods. The boxes must not tip over, must not slip and must not be stacked on top of each other unless the construction provides for it. Vibrations stress the colonies, and an overturned hive on a loading area is a problem that cannot be solved with a lashing strap.
What if the alternative is called "air freight"?
For particularly time-critical deliveries or very long distances, air transport can be the better choice. The transport time is reduced from days to hours, and the strain on the insects drops considerably. However, the costs are significantly higher, and the requirements for packaging and labelling for the air transport of live animals are strictly regulated. The decision between road and air ultimately depends on the distance, the urgency and the value of the consignment.

TRACES is the EU's electronic notification system for intra-Community trade in live animals. For deliveries to third countries, the requirements of the destination country are added, and these can differ from country to country. In addition, the usual transport documents are needed: CMR consignment note, commercial invoice and, where applicable, transit documents for crossing the border.
For particularly long distances or extremely time-critical deliveries, air transport can be the better option. The transport time is reduced to hours instead of days, and the strain on the insects from temperature and vibration drops considerably. However, the costs of air freight are significantly higher than for road transport. In addition, strict rules apply to the air transport of live animals regarding packaging, labelling and ventilation, laid down by the International Air Transport Association IATA in the Live Animals Regulations. The decision between road and air depends on the distance, the urgency, the value of the consignment and the infrastructure available at the destination.
Three points are decisive. First: does the freight forwarder have experience with temperature-controlled transports of live cargo, and does it know the specific requirements for cooling, ventilation and cargo securing with insects? Second: for third-country deliveries, can the forwarder fully prepare customs clearance in advance so that no waiting time arises at the border, and does it use a double driver crew where necessary to meet the three-day deadline? Third: are the transports covered by mandatory CMR insurance, and is additional cargo insurance available? With live insects for field pollination, it is not only the value of the goods that is at stake, but the entire harvest yield, which depends on punctual and undamaged delivery.
