Which factors influence import costs
For international goods deliveries, import costs consist of several components. Besides the goods value, customs duties, import VAT, transport costs, insurance, and other ancillary costs play a role.
The exact amount of duties also depends on the commodity code, country of origin, destination country, and the applicable customs regulations. For non-EU imports in particular, requirements sometimes differ considerably.
The meaning of customs value and import VAT
The customs value is in many cases the basis for calculating customs duties and import VAT. Depending on the delivery terms, not only the goods value but also transport and insurance costs are often included.
Import VAT is then calculated on the basis of the customs value and other import-related costs. As a result, the final import calculation can change significantly.
Why pre-calculations are used
Companies often use import-cost calculators for initial orientation before an order or tender. In international trade in particular, pre-calculations help to estimate total costs more transparently.
Nevertheless, actual duties may differ depending on the goods, HS code, or customs procedure. Only the customs and tax regulations in force at the time are binding.
