How transit times arise in road freight traffic 

The transit time of international transports depends on various factors. Besides the geographical distance, border crossings, customs clearance, traffic volume, public holidays, and the chosen transport mode play an important role. 

Particularly for transports towards the Caucasus, Central Asia, or the Balkans, transit times can change significantly due to border situations or ferry connections. 

Differences between Express, LTL, and FTL 

Direct transports and express runs usually reach the destination country faster than classic part loads. For groupage or part loads, additional transit times arise from transhipment, intermediate storage, or consolidation. 

The vehicle type used also influences the duration. Vans travel faster than heavy trucks on many corridors, particularly for time-critical shipments. 

Why transit times are only indicative values 

In international road freight traffic, transit times can never be fully guaranteed. Weather conditions, customs controls, political situations, or waiting times at borders can influence the actual workflow. 

For this reason, transit times are usually given as empirical values or estimated transit windows.
