Vehicle utilisation in international goods traffic

Vehicle utilisation is one of the most important factors in transport planning. This is not only about the permissible gross weight, but also about loading volume, loading metres, and available slots within the vehicle.

In international road transport, different vehicle types are used depending on the corridor. These include vans, 7.5t vehicles, 12t trucks, or 40t articulated lorries. The usable capacity differs considerably between them.

 Why vehicle utilisation is calculated

An imprecise estimation of utilisation can lead to additional reloading, empty space, or unsuitable vehicle dispositions. Particularly for international transports with several shipments or part loads, realistic planning is important.

The calculation supports the more efficient use of available capacities and the more economical organisation of transports. At the same time, unsuitable vehicle types can be ruled out early.

Influence of weight and volume

In daily transport operations, weight is not the only factor in vehicle selection. Often the available loading volume or the length of the occupied loading area is the limiting factor.

Large, light cargo can fully load a vehicle even though the permissible gross weight has not yet been reached. That is why weight, cubic metres, and loading metres are usually considered together.
