Kuwait transports and logistics – briefly explained
Transports to Kuwait are carried out predominantly by sea freight via the ports of Shuwaikh or Shuaiba and by air freight for time-critical shipments. While air freight needs only a few days, sea freight is significantly slower. The actual duration is heavily influenced by customs clearance, which can vary depending on the shipment.
Kuwait requires clean and complete documentation. A commercial invoice, packing list and transport document are mandatory. Depending on the goods, additional certificates or permits may be required. A correct and detailed goods description is particularly important.
For many products specific import rules apply in Kuwait. Some goods require permits or are subject to technical requirements. Particularly for machinery, electronics and specialised goods, it should be checked beforehand whether additional paperwork is required.
Customs clearance follows the classical scheme: document review, valuation and, if applicable, inspection of the goods. Delays often arise from inconsistencies in the paperwork. Precise preparation is therefore decisive.
Kuwait is part of the GCC area, which is why a basic customs rate of around 5 per cent often applies. However, there are exceptions depending on product group. In addition, local fees can apply that should be included in the calculation.
